Our school emphasises the importance of foreign languages.
For many of our students English itself is a foreign language. For this reason special English classes are taught by qualified EAL teachers. Children are assessed on entry to school and these lessons continue for as long as the student needs them - it is very much tailored to the needs of the individual student. In the Primary part of the school children will be withdrawn from class to have individual or group lessons as well as learning in the context of the whole class. In Secondary, EAL lessons are often taught while the rest of the class is having a foreign language lesson.
Students in Year 4 have 'taster' sessions in a variety of different languages - e.g. Polish, French, Japanese, Russian etc. In Years 5 or 6 they may start to learn Spanish or French 9 this depends upon their level in English). In Year 7 all students learn a foreign language - French or Polish or both.
As a school we are well aware of the importance of maintaining the mother tongue of our pupils. Consequently, we make arrangments for students to have lessons in their native language for up to three periods a week. Currently we provide mother tongue language lessons in French, German, Italian, Slovakian, Russian and Japanese.
