Primary Curriculum

The primary section of BISC consists of Nursery, Reception, Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2, altogether covering ages 3 to 11.

Nursery and Reception form the Foundation Stage and follow the appropriate English curriculum. The Nursery class is divided into two groups according to age. Our youngest pupils follow a programme which encourages 'learning through play,' catering for the educational and social needs of each individual child. This also applies to the slightly older nursery group, but with the addition of structured literacy and numeracy activities. These activities prepare our students for the more demanding requirements of the Reception class - though here, again, the emphasis is upon learning through experience and through structured play.

In Key Stages 1 and 2, great emphasis is placed on the core subjects of English and Mathematics, which are timetabled every day, in the morning. English lessons are based upon the National Literacy Strategy (a government-based literacy programme for all primary schools in England). Classes are taught through a combination of whole-class teaching and groupwork - dividing children into groups for spelling, comprehension, creative writing and grammar, according to the level of the individual. Mathematics lessons are based upon the National Numeracy Strategy (another UK government initiative) with its strong emphasis upon mental maths, in which all pupils are tested at the end of the academic year. Mathematics is also taught through a combination of class and group work. The primary maths scheme from the UK (New Heinemann Maths) is used throughout the primary section.

Science, History and Geography are largely topic-based. Whenever possible, classes are taken out on local field trips so that practical observation and first hand experience can be incorporated into the programme and their learning experience.

In RE (Religious Education) pupils learn about the major world religions. D & T (Design & Technology) is a practical subject, which involves project design, construction and some cooking skills. PSHE (Personal, Social and Health Education) includes the development of personal skills and an awareness of the needs of others and is a very important part of the social education of our students.

Art, Music, Foreign Languages, ESL (English as a Second Language), ICT (Information Communication Technology) and Physical Education are taught by subject specialist teachers. For all other subjects, and ongoing pastoral care, the class teacher is responsible.

Every lunchtime all primary-aged children go outside to play. Pupils in the Nursery, Reception and Key Stage 1 are taken to an enclosed garden opposite the school fully equipped with children’s play facilities. Key Stage 2 children are able to play ball games in a large outdoor basketball court – also enclosed - just five minutes’ walk from the school. This is followed throughout the year, weather permitting, and provides our younger pupils with the opportunity to run around, play, get plenty of fresh air, and let off steam.
